Police charged a New Kensington woman’s son in her stabbing death early Sunday evening.
Diana N. Rebold, 73, was found by police in the middle of Liberty Avenue in Arnold.
Police arrested Brian Johnathan Rebold, 38, of Arnold and charged with one count of criminal homicide and one count of first degree murder in the case. Police said he was standing near the victim’s body in the street when they arrived on scene.
Westmoreland County Coroner Tim Carson said Diana Rebold was pronounced dead at 7:25 p.m.
“It was a family incident,” Arnold police Chief Josh Stanga said when asked what led to the stabbing.
According to TribLive news partner WTAE, neighbors said the suspect was Rebold’s son.
Neighbor Charisse Campise told WTAE she was inside her home when she noticed a large police presence on the street. “I saw the lights, and then I saw her body lying on the ground covered, and I just started crying hysterically to my husband.”
Stanga said a disturbance was reported in the 100 block of Liberty Avenue just after 5:30 p.m. He said responding officers found the woman’s body lying in the middle of the street with multiple stab wounds and the suspect standing nearby.
Stanga said Brian Rebold admitted to the stabbing.
Authorities taped off a section of Liberty Avenue while police investigated at the scene for several hours.
Kristen Olszyk, who lives near where the incident occurred, said she moved to the neighborhood about 20 years ago and described it as a nice area with many families and older residents. The neighborhood was lined with well-kept homes.
“I saw all the ambulances flying down here. It concerned me because I know a lot of people on the street. Seeing this does not feel good,” Olszyk said.
“(The incident) could’ve been just at that house and nothing else will happen, but it will still be in my head that something else could go on,” she added.
